About South Huntington Water District

The South Huntington Water District (SHWD) has been supplying residents and businesses with clean, high-quality water since 1925. Headquartered in Huntington Station, NY, SHWD serves 80,000 residents year-round, delivering reliable water services at low rates. The district is renowned for its consistent water quality and commitment to environmental sustainability, ensuring safe and affordable water for generations.

The Challenge

SHWD wanted to offer its customers a simpler means of payment. They faced significant challenges with their legacy payment solution, which was inefficient and cumbersome. The system lacked the functionality needed to support the district’s growing customer base, requiring manual workarounds that often slowed down operations and frustrated staff. Customers were often limited to manual payment options – with many simply resorting to onsite cash deposits, which could sometimes result in delayed payments.

Adding to the lack of cohesion was a missing integration between SHWD’s payment system and its CIS (Customer Information System), Friendly Bytes.

The Solution  

Nuvei Bill Pay provided SHWD with an end-to-end checkout solution. Integrating with Friendly Bytes was crucial, and Nuvei’s dedicated implementation team worked closely with the customer, tailoring the proposed online portal solution to ensure compatibility and a smooth rollout.  

The new payment portal offered an easy-to-use interface, enabling customers to make payments quickly and securely. Automated reconciliation, robust reporting, and real-time visibility significantly reduced administrative workloads, upgrading the overall customer experience.

The Results  

Since implementing Nuvei Bill Pay, SHWD has seen a turnaround in its payment processes, with 15% of consumers registering on the new payment portal and 33% opting for Autopay. Within the first three months (one billing cycle) of launch, the number of online payments increased by over 60%, compared to previously available payment methods. The district’s customers have been highly receptive to the changes, making full use of the new, digital payment options at their fingertips.  

This new-found service flexibility is perfectly exemplified by SHWD’s upcoming office renovations, planned for late 2025.  Throughout the refurbishments, SHWD plans to temporarily pause all onsite cash payments. Historically, this would have been an inconvenience and disruption to customers. However, with the rollout of digital payment options, the SHWD team are confident in a smooth transition period while physical deposits aren't available.

Looking Ahead  

With Nuvei’s continued support, SHWD plans to enhance payment capabilities further to meet future customer needs. This has included plans to offer a dedicated phone-in payment service, powered by Nuvei. In a district with many native Spanish speakers, SHWD’s team has also been able to further tailor user experiences via the multilingual features of the payment portal. News of both these developments has been received very positively by SHWD customers.
