From Finance Officer to Payments Partnership Manager, Stefan Bursuc has spent over five years growing with Nuvei. Along the way, he has helped launch new payment solutions and built trusted partnerships across Europe and beyond. His journey reflects collaboration, strategic thinking, and a passion for creating payment solutions that work better for businesses and their customers.

Finding a path in payments

Stefan’s path to Nuvei wasn’t conventional, but it felt right from the start. He was working in the pharmaceutical and energy sectors when former colleague reached out about a Finance Officer role at Smart2Pay, just before it joined Nuvei.

“I joined to support the transition, but it quickly became clear this was a chance to be part of something bigger - to learn, grow, and help shape the future of payments.”

More than five years later, Stefan is still energized by the fast pace, the innovation, and the impact of his work at Nuvei.

From finance to partnerships

After a few years in finance, Stefan was ready for a new challenge - one that would take him beyond numbers and into building relationships that drive Nuvei’s growth. Moving into partnerships meant stepping into a cross-functional, people-centered role. Today, he works closely with teams across regions and functions, building long-term relationships that support Nuvei’s strategic goals.

“Partnership management is about trust and shared value. A partnership only works when both sides benefit - that principle guides everything I do.”

A standout moment in his career was helping launch a major European payments initiative. Coordinating with risk, compliance, operations, and regional teams, he helped turn a multi-year vision into a unified platform connecting major European payment schemes - a milestone he’s proud to have been part of.

Building meaningful connections

Stefan’s role revolves around people. Coming from finance - where weeks could pass without a meeting - he suddenly found his calendar filling up with calls across all different time zones.

“I try to stay approachable and genuinely available. Many of my partners and I communicate beyond formal channels, which makes collaboration smoother. Those personal connections make all the difference.”

He has also grown through challenges like public speaking and leading large cross-functional meetings.

“I used to forget what I wanted to say - even with slides in front of me - and I learned to rely on humour to recover. Those moments taught me how to make meetings engaging so everyone feels included and heard.”

Impacting merchants and customers

Stefan’s work ensures merchants have the tools and partnerships they need to succeed globally.

“Sales brings in the merchants, but partnerships makes sure they have the right payment methods to grow. Launching new solutions helps businesses serve their customers better - and that’s what keeps our work meaningful.”

Life outside work

Family and teammates provide Stefan with energy and perspective.

"My partner leads a demanding medical operation, and I’m constantly inspired by her dedication. At home, we encourage our kids to pursue their passions - our daughter is drawn to medicine, and our son is curious about technology and business. Explaining fintech to a 14-year-old is a challenge, but it keeps things interesting!"

He also enjoys football with Nuvei colleagues.

"We’ve played nine matches - and lost all nine - an achievement in its own right! But the camaraderie, laughs, and chance to connect outside work are what really make it worthwhile."

Advice for those starting in fintech

"Be patient with yourself. Fintech is complex - one day, you'll join a meeting and realize you understand the whole conversation. That's when you know you're truly growing."
