Ten years into his Nuvei journey, Ed Dean leads Product with a philosophy that’s equal parts pragmatic and human: share knowledge freely, ask what people need, and never be afraid to make a mistake. Having grown through some of the most significant builds in the business, Ed has earned a reputation as someone who leads by stepping forward - not standing back. Whether he’s shaping the product roadmap or bringing donuts into the Scottsdale office on a Wednesday, consistency is key.

Building from the ground up

Ed’s decade at Nuvei has taken him through some of the most foundational work in the business.

“The goal has always been to build something that just works - without making noise. The best infrastructure is the kind you don’t hear about. Now we are taking that same philosophy and applying it across gateways, card processing, and other solutions.”

Today, Ed’s remit spans product strategy across Nuvei’s global platforms. As VP of Product, he sits at the centre of a business that never fully switches off - by the time he’s had his first coffee in Scottsdale, the East Coast and Europe are already well into their day.

“I like to say it’s information in the morning and innovation in the afternoon. Mornings are about supporting the business - responding, unblocking, keeping things moving. The afternoons are where we get into the deeper work: roadmaps, solutions, what’s coming next.”

Air cover and the art of the mistake

Ed’s leadership style is rooted in a simple belief: his job is to remove obstacles, not create them. He describes his role as providing “air cover” - asking what people need to succeed, then getting out of their way.

“I strongly believe knowledge should be shared - silos simply don’t work. The more we share, the more we grow, and the more we avoid the same pitfalls as a team. My role isn’t to direct from the top down. It’s to ask: what do you need to be successful?”

He operates by two rules: work with people who genuinely want to be there - energy is contagious. And make mistakes - plenty of them. It’s the second that tends to catch people off guard.

“We learn more from mistakes than from easy wins. When people aren’t afraid to try, that’s when real innovation happens.”

Innovation starts with listening

For Ed, the best product ideas rarely emerge from internal planning sessions. They start with a customer conversation - a pain point, a constraint, a problem that nobody’s quite solved yet.

“Innovation begins with understanding what keeps our customers up at night. Their challenges become the foundation for what we build. We listen, we ask questions, and then we ask: what if it was possible?”

Instant Settlement is a good example. It started with a customer conversation about a regulatory constraint. The initial response was that it couldn’t be done. Ed’s team challenged that assumption - and built something that has since become one of Nuvei’s most successful product developments.

“Payments is commerce - a universal language. Our clients are constantly evolving, and our job is to evolve with them. There’s always something new to solve. That’s what makes it so rewarding.”

Proudest of people

Ask Ed about his proudest achievement at Nuvei, and he won’t point to a product launch or a business milestone. He’ll point to people.

“There’s an old saying: if you chase the dollar, you’ll never find it. But if you focus on doing the best work you can, the results follow. What I’m most proud of is watching people grow - seeing team members get promoted, step into leadership, and succeed. That’s the real win.”

Connection takes intention

Staying connected across a global team doesn’t happen by accident. Ed is in the Scottsdale office every day, and over the years has built small rituals that have quietly become part of the culture. Every Tuesday, he wears a vest - without fail, for the past five years. Every Wednesday, he brings donuts.

“It might sound small, but consistency builds trust and stability - whether you’re in the office or working remotely. And when I connect with someone new, I make a point of following up. In a global company, it’s easy to have one conversation and not speak again for months. We have to be proactive about keeping the dialogue going.”

Life beyond the roadmap

Outside of Nuvei, Ed is an avid trail runner and volleyball player who has completed countless 5Ks, 10Ks, and obstacle races - usually in costume. His character of choice: Where’s Waldo (or Wally to some!). He also has some characteristically practical wisdom on the subject of distance running.

“The medal for a 5K is the same size as the one for a half marathon. So just do the 5K. Nobody needs to know.”

For anyone thinking about joining Nuvei or looking to grow in product, Ed’s advice is straightforward: ask questions, follow your passion, and don’t let the fear of getting it wrong hold you back.

“Nuvei isn’t just a stepping stone - it’s a place to build and grow. It’s global, constantly evolving, and it rewards people who embrace change and commit to the team. If you’ve found your place here, lean into it and make the most of the opportunity.”
