From joining Nuvei while still in his final year of university in London, to now being based in Singapore and turning data into decisions for commercial teams across the business, Stefan Boychev has taken every opportunity to learn quickly, step up, and expand his skillset.
Finding his way into payments
Growing up in Bulgaria and later moving to the UK, Stefan saw first-hand how different payment experiences can be across markets. That contrast sparked an interest in how payments work behind the scenes and how they can be improved.
“When I moved to the UK, I saw how seamless payments could be in everyday life. Then during COVID-19, with tap-to-pay becoming more widely used, it really highlighted how quickly the space was evolving.”
Looking for a challenge in something ever evolving and fast paced, when the opportunity to join Nuvei came up, Stefan didn’t think twice about starting a career in payments.
Learning by doing, from day one
Stefan joined Nuvei while still in his final year of university, stepping straight into a Business Development role in London. It was a hands-on introduction to the business, and one he embraced fully.
“I was given the chance to get involved from day one, which really helped me build confidence and learn quickly. Nuvei didn’t ease me in gently - and looking back, that was exactly what I needed. It was all about saying yes to the uncomfortable.”
From there, he began to explore the role of data and analytics in supporting decision-making. That shift led him into the Commercial Enablement function, where he now supports teams across the business with the insights they need to make better, faster decisions.
“I’ve always believed in continuous development. I really enjoyed business development, but I wanted to expand my skillset further, while building on what I’d learned. The timing felt right, and Nuvei is always supportive in helping you take the next step in your career.”
Turning data into action
In a business as fast-moving as Nuvei, data is everywhere; but making it useful is where the real impact lies.
Stefan’s role focuses on creating visibility. Through reporting, dashboards, and insights, he enables teams to understand performance, spot trends, and act quickly.
“If people don’t have the right information, they’re working in the dark. Our goal is to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
From tracking pipeline performance to highlighting areas that need attention, his work helps teams stay aligned and respond faster.
A global move, driven by ambition
While his career began in London, Stefan always had his sights set on Asia. Having studied international business with Mandarin, he was drawn to the region and the opportunity to experience a different way of doing business. When the opportunity came up, the move to Singapore felt like a natural next step.
“Asia is a fascinating and complex market, especially in payments - every country has its own challenges and dynamics. Being here has pushed me out of my comfort zone and accelerated my learning in ways I didn’t expect. It’s been a tremendous experience, both professionally and personally.”
Singapore itself has been a standout experience. A truly global city, a welcoming office, and a team that connects just as easily outside of work as it does within it.
“It’s a really close-knit team here. Even on my first day - slightly jet-lagged - people were showing me where to get the best chicken rice and how to get around. That made settling in really easy. We spend time together outside of work too - lunch, sport, socialising. That sense of community makes a big difference when you’re building a life in a new place.”
Collaboration starts with listening
Sitting at the intersection of multiple teams, Stefan’s role depends on strong collaboration. His approach is to listen first, act next.
“Often people don’t come with a clear requirement - they come with a problem. So the first step is understanding what they actually need. From there, it’s about working together to find the best way forward, while being realistic about timelines and priorities. Sometimes you have to say ‘let me come back to you’ - it’s better to understand it properly than rush into the wrong solution.”
Success in analytics, for Stefan, isn’t just about technical knowledge - it’s about how you work with people. Strong stakeholder management, prioritisation, and adaptability are essential in a role where requests are constant and priorities shift quickly. He’s also a strong advocate for the value of AI when used in the right way.
“AI is not about replacing thinking - it’s about working smarter. It can help you learn faster and approach problems differently.”
Go after it
Stefan’s career - from Bulgaria to London to Singapore, and from business development into analytics - has been shaped by a willingness to pursue what interests him rather than wait for it to come to him.
It’s the same mindset he looks for in others, and the advice he’d give to anyone starting out:
“Be proactive and focused. Don’t wait for opportunities - go after them. Build strong relationships, stay open to learning, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. A global career comes from being willing to take on new challenges and adapt.”
Life beyond the dashboards
Outside of work, Stefan trains Muay Thai several times a week, runs, and spends time in the gym. He’s also a keen photographer - drawn to capturing moments while travelling - and someone who finds equal enjoyment in a good coffee and a book on a Sunday morning.
